Welcome to Emergency Flood Defence, providers of the revolutionary emergency inflatable sandbag, your first line of defence.
The Facts!
Around 5 million people, in 2 million properties, live in flood risk areas in England and Wales according to the Environment Agency and an undisclosed number in Scotland, monitored by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.
Businesses lose millions every year through damage caused by flood and heavy rain, little effort is being made to rectify the lack of emergency readiness in the office or high street. The emergency inflatable sandbag should be a part of all business continuity planning.
Private homes continue to suffer during this ever changing climate yet the signs are continually being ignored. Global warming is having an adverse impact on the weather and we can no longer predict when nature will strike back at us. By ensuring an adequate stock of the emergency inflatable sandbags, you will have the ability to respond immediately to rising water levels, flash floods and heavy rains without having to rely on over stretched local resources.
Who’s Responsible For My Premises?
Local councils are not obliged to supply sandbags in a flood emergency as they have a priority to protect the general public rather than the individual. Your Local Council, The Environment Agency and The Scottish Environment Protection Agency place the onus squarely on your shoulders to ensure that you have adequate protection in place to minimise damage to your property or business during floods and heavy rainfall.
Many insurance companies are now refusing to insure properties in high risk areas.
A number of local councils stock limited numbers of filled sand bags and charge approximately £4+vat for delivery and the same for collection per bag totaling £8+vat for each bag, that’s a massive £94 for 10 bags which you don’t get to keep and with no guarantee of getting to you on time if at all. (The sandbags must be booked in advance).
How Can Inflatable Sandbags Assist My Business?
As well as providing a first defence barrier against flood, the emergency inflatable sandbag can provide a solution for large spillages; burst pipes, flooded car park, absorbing rain water from footings and trenches and a multitude of other uses within the construction industry.
What Are Emergency Inflatable Sandbags?
The emergency inflatable sandbag is composed of polymers which expand on contact with water. They are delivered flat in packs of 10 for ease of storage and weigh 430grams each (they actually look like empty sandbags). After submerging in water for approximately 5-6 minutes they grow to a substantial 20kg and mirror the traditional sandbag.
How Do I Use An Inflatable Sandbag?
Submerge the emergency inflatable sandbag in water for 5-6 minutes; it speeds up the process if they are moved back and forth as this ensures quick and even inflation. Use your bath or large sink to ensure that the bags are completely covered. The bags can be inflated exactly where you need them by filling up a wheelbarrow or water trough to submerge the bags, this will save you having to carry them through the premises. You could use a garden hose to aim directly at them, but this does slow the inflation process down. Though not ideal, if the flood has already started to encroach on your premises you can put them straight down to the ground to begin soaking up the water immediately, this will give you a bit of time to inflate others in the correct manner. Have a practice run to see what suits your circumstances best, remember they are re-usable!
Once inflated stack the emergency inflatable sandbags as you would a standard sandbag. The bags are designed to protect up to a depth of 2 feet (60/70cm).
What happens When The Emergency Or Flood Is Over?
These bags are reusable and when dried naturally, return to their original shape and size. Unlike the traditional sandbag storage or collection is not an issue.
What Else Can We Do With Inflatable Sandbags?
Let’s be honest no bag designed to divert water is going to make a great garden ornament but they do have their uses;
For you keen gardeners the bags have been used for “Greening”.
Greening (root growing) is an environmental control for erosion and root growth.
Inflate and place 2-3 Bags in the ground before planting a tree or plant. This encourages the root system to grow downwards instead of searching for surface moisture. This method produces a strong root system and is a benefit in clay soil, high wind locations and embankment/hill planting. As the bags hold moisture for such a long time they also serve to feed during drought periods.
